Roanoke Adds 4,000 Jobs in 2011 |

The Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) added 3,996 jobs in 2011, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The growth last year occurred in manufacturing, logistics, retail, education and health, according to data from the Virginia Employment Commission.
On a seasonally-adjusted basis, the Roanoke MSA's unemployment rate fell a full percentage point to 6.4%. This places the Roanoke MSA's unemployment rate at 55th in the nation, meaning that Roanoke's unemployment rate is lower than just over 85% of metros across the country. The Roanoke MSA unemployment rate is lower than many competing Southern metros such as Lynchburg, Richmond, Asheville, Charlotte, Knoxville and Chattanooga.
